EXPLORING THE FLEXIBILITY OF ESP MATERIALS THROUGH THE IPO MODEL: CORPUS AND CONSUMER INSIGHTS FROM THE TURKISH EFL CONTEXT

چکیده

Unlike previous research, which tended to exclusively conduct expert/user evaluation and rely heavily on subjective survey data for simply ascertaining general satisfaction with a fixed predetermined set of coursebook features, this multimethod study sought provide holistic, multidimensional thus more realistic assessment performance through conflating objective information its compositionality reflective user knowledge about the actual functioning. Therefore, we used inputs-processes-outcomes (IPO) model deconstruction global in dental English, based expert review corpus findings complemented it less-studied student-users’ (87 sophomores from Turkish-medium school large urban public university) retrospective against preferred criteria. The corpus-based IPO analysis (non-)texts content their post-use reflections revealed that students, mildly positive orientation, were concerned with: scope content-knowledge, visuality text quality presented by inputs; amount nature language practice, opportunities oral fluency development independent learning, also acquisition disciplinary vocabulary triggered processes, whereas material proved efficient for: making core accessible pedagogically-prepared non-argumentative texts, introducing an egalitarian style communication created dentist-patient dialogues, ensuring ample practice non-threatening atmosphere right blend pre-communicative loosely-controlled communicative activities, developing formulaic sequences essentially workplace transactions, building carefully-selected repertoire high-frequency words teaching directly true-to-life photos. To achieve deeper learning outcomes than functional mastery, still needs transformation through: learner-compiled (e-)portfolios academic humorous genres, increased visibility women dentists, creative use illustrations, integration cross-cultural elements, conscious attention grammar ludic incorporation service-learning projects linguistic/cultural mediation.
